Bringing children home
RESTORATION
Restoration viability
Research tells us that children fare better overall, when they can remain at home or with family if possible. It also tells us that long term outcomes for children in the out of home care system are not as positive as those for children who remain with family. A thorough restoration assessment will consider all the factors that resulted in the child or young person’s entry into care, the minimum outcomes (according to the care plan) for the parents to have the children returned, their current placement and attachments as well as any information relevant to the particular circumstances of the child, young person or family.
SKC believe that the most critical element of this assessment process is to establish the parent’s level of insight into the reasons for their child’s removal and entry into out of home care (OOHC). Then secondly, their willingness to engage with services and in the assessment process, as well as their level of motivation to address the issues that resulted in their child entering care, before being able to resume the care of their child. These important elements then need to be considered in relation to the child's wishes, attachments, stability and immediate and long term interests.
